Green Island

Green Island is located close to the north Queensland city of Cairns. It is a coral cay that is situated right on top of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Green island is probably the easiest island on the reef itself to get to and is only a short ferry ride from Cairns. The island has been the most popular destination for day tours out of Cairns for decades and the first underwater observatory on the entire reef was built here. You can still use it today but it is a bit of a let down after experiencing all the other options that now exist to see the reef.

Green island has a beautiful five star resort. To reduce the effect that tourists have on this sensitive coral atoll, this resort only caters for limited numbers of guests so you need to book as early as you can. Like most coral cays, Green Island is a haven for wildlife. Many different species of seabirds nest here and you need to be careful where you walk so as not to disturb their nests and wandering chicks. Many different species of turtles also come to Green Island during the breeding season and nesting females or baby hatchlings are a common site. Being right on the reef, is a great advantage for those visitors who want to dive or snorkel. The reef begins at the waters edge so you can simply walk in off the beach and away you go. A talk with the local dive staff will soon fill you in on the best places to go and tell you what to look out for. Picnic lunches can be arranged from the resort if you want to make a day of it. All sorts of water sports are also available. Paddle skis, sailing catamarans and hire tinnies are all available for hire.
