Lady Elliot Island
The southern most reef on the Great Barrier Reef is home to a beautiful coral cay called Lady Elliot Island. This is one of the best places to see the Great Barrier Reef and the resort being only two and a half stars wont break the bank to stay at. Lady Elliot island provides the opportunity to visit the reef either for a day tour or an extended diving holiday. Being at the southern end of the reef means that it is close to Brisbane and can be accessed from there. The island can only be accessed by air and regular flights operate on a daily basis from Hervey Bay and Bundaberg. The resort is ecologically balanced with its power coming from a substantial solar installation and water being desalinated from the ocean.
Accommodation on Lady Elliot Island is in permanent tent cabins with raised timber floors or in beachfront cabins. There is a restaurant, swimming pool, dive center and a reef education center. Qualifies dive masters accompany certified divers on guided dives. Lady Elliot Island has many recognised dive sites and trails and water clarity is rarely less that twenty meters. Manta rays are the emblem of the island, and they are often sighted on dives. Turtles, sharks and and many reef fish are always about. On the island itself, there is a giant seabird rookery with many different species of birds. Some of the very rare frigate birds come here every year. Many species of turtles also come to Lady Elliot Island to breed and staff will be happy to take you on a guided walk at night to see them nesting and watch the baby turtles hatching out.
Fraser Island is located just to the south and many travellers like to do a reef and rainforest package that includes a stay and tours on Fraser Island followed by a stay and diving on Lady Elliot Island.
