Lord Howe Island
Lord Howe Island has often been described as the most beautiful island in the south pacific ocean. It is located east of Ballina and is officially a part on New South wales. The island has two mountain peaks that slope down though a covering of rain forest to a magnificent shoreline consisting of beautiful bays and beaches. On the eastern side is a lagoon that contains the southernmost coral reef in the world. The town is full of great accommodation and there are some truly fantastic luxury resorts as well as affordable family accommodation. Transport around the island is by bicycle and there are hardly any cars. A coastal trading ship does regular voyages from Yamba on the east coast of Australia, to Lord Howe island to carry supplies that are required and there is a wharf in the lagoon.


There is lots to do on Lord Howe island. As you can imagine, it is a fisherman's paradise and you can go out on a charter boat or try your luck from the shore. Large Kingfish are caught here in plague proportions and they provide both a fantastic fight as well as a tasty dinner. Diving is also a popular pastime and clear, unpolluted waters with lots of coral and fish life provide a fantastic experience. For those who like to remain ashore there is a great golf course. The beaches are second to none and relaxing and swimming around the islands many beaches is very popular. Bush walking is also a great way to spend the day and the intrepid can clime one of the mountains and see one of the most spectacular views anywhere in the world.
Being predominantly a holiday island and reliant on a tourism based economy, Lord Home island looks after its visitors well. Accommodation, shopping, restaurants, cafes and activities all come together to provide a holiday atmosphere that is palpable and most visitors to the island are here because they loved it so much the previous visit that they came back for more. So if you are looking for a new place to spend a week or so, you could not choose a better location that Lord Howe Island.
