New Caladonia has about one quarter of the nickel in the world and mining for this metal contributes heavily to a tourism dominated economy. Some of the outer islands, especially the Society islands, that are part of the group provide a very special south sea island holiday. The islands are not as busy as some and the region is pristine with magnificent coral atolls, and surrounding reef systems. Regular air services are available from many different locations which makes New Caladonia an easy choice for tourists.
