Norfolk Island
Norfolk Island is an integral part of Australia's early history. When convicts were sent to Australia to spend their sentence, the worst and most violent of these offenders were sent to a prison built on Norfolk Island. These violent offenders were held in conditions that history has showed were quite brutal and there was plenty of suffering. The early days of the Norfolk Island prison colony were certainly no picnic. Many years later the descendants of the mutiny on the bounty who had taken up residence on Pitcain Island in the western pacific were moved to Norfolk Island which was a much more hospitable home. Today, the ruins of the prisons and the descendents of those Pitcairn islanders with surnames like Christian and Quintal remind visitors of a century past and some of the less pleasant history of the Europeans in the Pacific Ocean.
